Photo-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement in Ridgehill
Someone backed the car in a little too far, a bin or a bicycle brushed the track, and since then the door starts to close and comes back up. One sensor now sits at a slightly different angle from the other.

Never bypass, tape over or relocate the sensors to make a door close; a door that reverses is reporting something worth fixing.
In plain words
The sensors are only as good as the thin two-conductor wire that links them to the opener. It runs from the low-voltage terminals on the head unit along the ceiling and down each wall to the floor, stapled as it goes, and it is easily pierced, cut during renovations, chewed, or pulled loose at the terminals. When both sensor lights are dark, or the opener's code says the circuit is open or reversed, the technician tests the run end to end, repairs the damaged section or replaces the whole run, checks polarity at the terminals, and clips the new wire clear of the track.

How the visit goes

- 1
Brackets and height on both sides
The two sensors have to sit at the same height, level, and facing each other squarely, no higher than about 15 cm (6 in) above the floor so the beam catches a small child or a pet. The technician measures both sides, because a bracket that has slipped a couple of centimetres down a track leg is enough to lose the beam. Each bracket is checked for bends from a bumper or a bin, for loose carriage bolts or wing nuts, and for rust where salt slush has sat against it for winters on end. A bracket screwed to a wall or the floor is checked for anchors that have worked loose.
- 2
Bringing the pair back to the doorway
Sometimes the sensors exist but have been defeated: taped face to face next to the head unit so the circuit is always satisfied and the door closes on anything. The technician separates the pair, checks that both still work, and mounts them where they belong on each side of the opening, low to the floor and facing each other. New wire is run down each side, brackets are fitted, and the alignment is set. The opener is then made to prove itself with the beam test, and the household is shown why the pair matters and how to keep it working, so the shortcut is never tempting again.
- 3
If it ever reverses again
Should the door start bouncing back up in the future, you know the order to check. Look along the floor for anything in the beam. Look at the two sensor lights for a dark or flickering one. Look at whether the door backs up as soon as it starts or only after touching something, since the second points to the door's settings rather than the beam. Note whether the opener light is flashing and how many times. With those four facts the cause is usually obvious, and if a visit is needed, the technician arrives already knowing where to begin.

What affects the quote
- 1
An opener without a sensor circuit
Where the operator predates monitored sensors and cannot accept a pair, the quote changes shape into a modern operator with its own sensors, which is discussed as a separate decision rather than folded in.
- 2
Corrosion reaching the head unit
Where salt and water have travelled up the wire to the terminals, or the sensor terminals on the board are damaged, the repair extends beyond the pair and that is set out separately.
- 3
Length and route of the wire run
A damaged section near a sensor is a short repair. A fresh run from the motor to both sides of the doorway takes longer, more so where the wire is buried in a finished ceiling.

Photo-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement: questions
What happens during the visit, in order?
Questions first: what the door does, when it began, what changed. Then the beam path is cleared, the sensor lights are read, the opener's flash code is counted, and the brackets and heights are measured. If the signs point to the circuit, the wire is traced and tested with a meter. The cause is fixed, whether that is alignment, brackets, wire, a shade or a new pair, and the visit closes with the beam test and the contact reversal test.
What do the small lights on the sensors mean?
Arrangement varies by model: most pairs carry an indicator on each side, in differing colours for sender and receiver, though some older pairs light only the receiver, so check the maker's chart. A receiving light that is dark or flickering means the beam is not landing on it, so the pair needs aligning or something is in the way. Both lights dark means the pair has no power, which points to the wire or the terminals at the head unit. Steady lights on both sides mean a healthy system.
Do sensors wear out with age?
They do, slowly. The infrared emitter and the receiver dim over many years, lenses craze or cloud from sun and salt, housings crack, and water finds its way in at floor level. A pair that needs re-aligning more and more often, or whose light drifts between steady and flickering with nothing touched, is usually ageing. Because pairs are matched to the opener, an older opener is worth identifying early so the right replacement is on hand.

What the census means at the door
23%
Newer homes. About 23% of homes in Brampton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Many newer homes have a keypad by the door, several remotes and an app that reports whether the door is open. We keep all of these talking to the opener, clear codes from devices that have gone missing and set up new ones so the whole household is covered.
53%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 53% of homes in Brampton (2021 Census).
In areas mixing houses with townhouses and condos, a technician often works on several doors on one street, some owned outright and some looked after by management. Scheduling them together saves everyone time, and we are glad to plan a visit that covers the group.
