Good advice is worth more than a sales pitch. In this section we explain how doors and openers work, what wears out and why, and how to tell a small job from a big one.

Repair & Maintenance
My door is quite old. Is an inspection still worthwhile?
Yes, and often more so. Age alone does not say how much life is left in a spring or a roller, but condition does, and an inspection measures condition. Many older doors are sound and simply need a few worn parts and fresh lubricant. Where the report shows several items coming due at once, you can weigh planned repairs against a new door with real information rather than a guess. Garage Door Safety Inspection
What information helps when I book?
The door type and rough size, single or double; the opener brand or a photo of its label; what you have noticed, such as noise, shaking, hesitation, slamming or reversing, and whether it is worse in cold weather; whether the door has been struck by anything; and whether the springs are above the door or along the sides. None of this is required, but each detail helps the right parts and tools arrive with the technician. Garage Door Tune-Up
Can I just push the roller back into the track myself?
The roller is only the visible part of the problem. Behind it are cables and springs holding the door's weight unevenly, and a door can drop or swing when a section is moved without the load taken off first. A trained technician clamps the door, releases the tension in a controlled way and seats the rollers in order. Leaving it to that process protects both you and the sections themselves. How do I know whether the damage is only cosmetic?
Watch the door move. A cosmetic dent leaves the section flat at the joints, the door travelling without a catch, and the hinges and rollers seated normally. Signs that the damage goes further include a crease that reaches a joint or stile, a hinge screw that has pulled out, a roller sitting crooked in the track, a gap of daylight at a joint, or a shudder as that section reaches the track curve. Any of those calls for a proper assessment. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
What lubricant is right for a garage door?
A lubricant made for garage doors, applied lightly to hinge knuckles, roller stems and the springs, following the door maker's own recommendation, since the right product and whether bearings are included varies by manufacturer. General-purpose penetrating oils are thin and wash away, and heavy grease attracts grit. Nothing goes on the track raceway or on a nylon or plastic wheel. The opener's chain or screw rail may take a lithium grease according to its manual, and the manual for your door names what its maker prefers. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Why is there a gap opening between two panels as the door goes up?
The two panels at that joint are no longer being held together on one side. A hinge that has cracked through, pulled its screws or lost its pin lets the panels hinge open around the remaining hardware, and the gap shows as they round the curve where the joint flexes most. Replacing the failed hinge, and checking its partner on the other end, brings the panels back into line. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
How is the vertical track attached to the wall?
Two ways are common. Bracket-mounted track uses several L-shaped jamb brackets, each lag-screwed into the wood jamb, which lets the track be adjusted a little at each bracket. Angle-mounted track bolts to a full-height continuous angle, often chosen where sideroom is tight. In both cases the fasteners bite into the jamb, so the condition of that wood matters as much as the track itself. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
Can I use the door as soon as the work is finished?
Yes. The visit ends with the door balanced by hand, run through full cycles and the opener reconnected and tested, so it is ready for normal use the moment the technician packs up. There is no settling period for cables. It is a good idea to watch the first few openings yourself to get a sense of how a level, balanced door sounds, so you notice any change later. Openers & Access
How old is too old to repair?
Age alone is not the test; parts and safety are. The technician checks the exact model and part numbers, because even a unit from the last two decades can have a board, sensor or trolley that is no longer made. Where the parts are available, a repair is usually straightforward. Where a key part is discontinued with nothing to replace it, or the unit predates photo eyes, replacement is the sounder choice even for a small fault. The technician tells you which side of that line your unit sits on. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Should I oil the chain?
Follow the opener's manual, and lean toward less. Many makers ask for the chain to be left dry or given only a very light treatment, because a heavily oiled chain collects grit that grinds the sprocket and drips onto the car. The grease that matters is white lithium on the rail where the trolley runs, renewed every two or three years, and on the gears inside the head, which the technician packs during a repair. Penetrating sprays are kept away from the whole drive. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Will the safety sensors be tested as part of the repair?
Yes, every time. After the drive work and the relearning of travel and force, the technician runs the door onto a 2x4 laid flat on the floor to confirm it reverses on contact, and passes an object through the photo-eye beam while it closes to confirm it reverses again. The sensors' height and alignment are checked, and the tests are shown to you so you can repeat them monthly. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
What information helps when I ask for a quote?
The width and height of the door, whether it is single or double, what it is made of and whether it is insulated, the make and model on the old opener's label, the ceiling height and what the ceiling is made of, where the nearest receptacle is, and which features you want: belt or chain, battery backup, keypad, phone control. Photographs of the opener, the door's top section and the ceiling settle most questions. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Why are springs and cables handled by technicians?
Springs store substantial energy, while lift cables and bottom fixtures transmit the forces that raise the door. Replacement requires the assembly to be secured, tension to be controlled and matched parts to be installed in a defined sequence. Trained handling, proper tools and the selected system's instructions keep that work orderly and precise. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
What if there is very little room above the opening?
Low headroom can often be addressed with a track arrangement designed for the available space. Accurate measurements are essential because the top section, track curve, springs and opener all compete for clearance. The installer maps ceiling obstructions and selects a supported configuration from the door system options. Storage or lighting may need repositioning to preserve the required travel zone. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
How is the new door tested after installation?
Technicians cycle it by hand to assess balance, cable tracking, roller travel, clearances, and seal contact. After the operator is connected, they set the open and close limits, confirm the manual release, interrupt the photoelectric beam, and conduct the prescribed contact-reversal check. Hardware and reinforcement receive a final visual review with the door closed and raised. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
How are two side-by-side doors made to look consistent?
The layout uses shared reference lines for window height, panel divisions, handles, strap accents and exterior trim. Each opening is still measured separately because floors and jambs can differ. Samples and elevation drawings help resolve whether both doors use identical patterns or coordinated versions scaled to their widths. Installation then checks closed position and seal contact independently while preserving the planned visual alignment. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
