What's happening right now?

Door stuck open

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the door where it is: forcing it down or pressing the button again can bend it.
  2. Nobody walks, plays or parks under the door until it has been checked.
  3. The red release cord stays untouched while the door is open, because the door can fall.

Door won't close

Safely, right now

  1. Give the remote a rest: each new try strains the opener and can bend the door.
  2. Don't step or reach under the door to move anything. If a bin, bike or snow is in the way, mention it when you call.
  3. Leave the safety sensors near the floor as they are: never tape them or bypass them.

Spring snapped

Safely, right now

  1. Don't lift the door by hand and don't use the opener.
  2. Keep people, pets and cars clear of the door.
  3. The emergency release stays untouched while the door is up, because the door can come down.

Car stuck inside

Safely, right now

  1. Don't drive into the door or try to force it open.
  2. Don't pull the release or lift the door if it feels heavy or you heard a bang. That usually means a broken spring.
  3. Arrange another way to get where you are going for now. The car can wait inside.

A torsion spring letting go sounds like something fell in the garage, and then the door refuses to lift. If that happened in Brampton today, we bring the matching spring, replace it as a pair when the door has two, check the cables and bearings beside it, and rebalance the door before we leave.

The fix, explained · Brampton

What is the door doing?

EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementOne side of the door sits higher than the other in the tracks, and a lift cable is hanging slack or has jumped off its drum.

The fix

Torsion spring replacement is really a service on the whole balance system. The spring sits on a shaft that turns in a centre bearing and two end bearings, drives a pair of cable drums, and lifts the door through two steel cables.

Until then

  1. When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetYou tapped the door with the bumper while backing in, barely a nudge, and now the bottom corner has swung inward.

The fix

A reset is different from a track repair, although one visit can include both. Resetting means returning the rollers, cables and sections to the path the track already defines and correcting the small misalignments that let them leave it.

Until then

  1. Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementThe cable has wrapped itself around the shaft above the door instead of sitting on its drum.

The fix

Winter is hard on the bottom of a garage door. Slush and road salt run off the car and pool exactly where the cables loop onto the bottom brackets, and wire rope that is wet and salted for four months a year rusts from the inside out.

Until then

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementOpen the door by hand and it drifts back down on its own, a little at first and then all at once.

The fix

A spring visit follows a fixed order, so you know what to expect. The technician releases the opener, raises the door fully and clamps it, because an extension spring is at its slackest with the door open.

Until then

Book soonEmergency Release RepairIt is the coldest morning of the year.

The fix

The release only earns its keep on a door that behaves once it is free of the opener, so the visit starts with the door closed and a balance test rather than with the handle. Disconnected, a healthy door lifts with modest effort, holds around a metre off the floor and stays put at the top.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.

Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairYou press the remote from the driveway and hear the motor hum overhead, a steady drone with no movement behind it.

The fix

Diagnosis answers a question you cannot settle from the driveway: repair or replace? Age matters, because boards and gear kits for a twenty-five-year-old unit may no longer be made.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

What the census means at the door

23%

Newer homes. About 23% of homes in Brampton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Newer doors are built to tighter tolerances, so a small bend in a track or a loose bracket shows up sooner as a rub or a shudder. Regular tune-ups keep everything aligned and catch the wear on rollers and hinges before it affects the panels.

53%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 53% of homes in Brampton (2021 Census).

Where housing is mixed, the doors are mixed as well: wide insulated doubles, narrow singles in rows and the occasional rolling door on a small commercial unit at the corner. Spring type, cable length and opener strength are matched to each door individually.

Which fix fits?

IfA car clipped the track and it is bent near the floor.

ThenTrack section repair or replacement.

A bent lower track binds the rollers on every cycle; straightening or a new section restores clean travel.

IfA hinge has cracked and the panel flexes as the door moves.

ThenHinge replacement.

Hinges are numbered for their position on the door; the right one keeps the section aligned.

IfThe rollers wobble in the track and the door shudders.

ThenRoller replacement.

Worn bearings and stems let the roller wander; a new set tracks true.

Answers in plain language

Advice · (289) 901-2822

Will the tune-up include replacing worn parts?

Small wear items found on the day, such as a roller or a hinge on a middle section, a bottom seal or a few fasteners, can often be replaced during the visit if you agree and the part is on the truck. Larger items, including springs, cables, drums, bottom brackets, a bent track or an opener gear, are written up as separate repairs with their own quote so you can decide with the facts in hand rather than under a raised ladder.

One side of my door hangs lower than the other. What does that mean?

A door that sits tilted almost always has a lifting cable that has gone slack, unwound from its drum or broken on the low side. The springs are still pulling on the other side, which is why the door racks and the rollers escape. Leave it where it is; levelling it means handling the springs and rewinding both cables evenly, which is done with the door clamped and the tension controlled.

Do you replace the whole handle or just the cylinder?

Whichever the fault calls for. A worn or broken cylinder in a handle that is otherwise sound is swapped or rekeyed on its own. A handle that is cracked, corroded through or of a pattern with no parts available is replaced as a set with its spindle and inside turn handle. The technician shows you what has failed before either route is taken.

Why did the hinge crack in the first place?

Steel flexed often enough eventually cracks, and several things speed that up. A door out of balance is dragged by the opener, and every hinge takes the strain. A seized roller twists its hinge on each trip. A track out of line pinches the panels at the curve. A wide panel without a strut flexes at the joint. Corrosion at the low hinges thins the steel. The technician looks for which of these was at work so the new hinge is spared the same stress.
